How to Select Dryer Fabric for a Paper Machine: An RFQ-First Method

Selecting dryer fabric is not a matter of choosing a mesh pattern from a catalogue. The fabric works inside a specific dryer position, with a defined paper grade, moisture profile, support requirement, and machine condition. A useful inquiry starts with the operating problem to be solved.

Start with the dryer position and paper objective

Identify where the fabric will run: a single-tier or multi-tier dryer group, a transfer point, or another position. State the paper grade and the result you need to protect, such as sheet support, stable travel, surface condition, or a planned replacement. The same construction is not automatically suitable for every position on one machine.

Describe the operating window instead of sending only a sample

Provide machine width, ordered length, speed, paper grade, basis-weight range, dryer-section temperature and humidity information available at site, and the existing fabric construction. Also note seam preference, edge condition, contamination, tracking history, and whether the request is for a planned change or a troubleshooting replacement. A sample is useful, but it should be read together with these conditions.

Turn the information into a reviewable RFQ

Ask the supplier to confirm the proposed construction, dimensions, joining method, and information still required before manufacture. Where conditions are incomplete, the selection should be marked for site confirmation rather than presented as a guaranteed result.
